How to write Instagram captions for an app, with examples

A simple caption structure for app accounts: hook, value, call to action and hashtags, with example captions for different post types.

A good image earns the pause; the caption earns the save or the tap. Most app captions fail by opening with the app's name and ending with "download now". This structure fixes that and works for any post type.

The four-part caption

  1. 1Hook (first line). It is what shows before "more", so it must stand on its own. A question, a surprising claim you can back up, or a relatable line.
  2. 2Value (one to three short lines). The point of the post, in plain words. Say it again in different words than the image.
  3. 3Call to action (one line). One ask: save this, tell us in the comments, link in bio. Not three.
  4. 4Hashtags (six to ten). Specific to your category and audience, written after the caption. Avoid generic tags such as love or instagood.

Examples by post type

Quote post (running app). "Some days the run is the proof. Not the pace, not the distance: the fact that you laced up. Save this for the hard days."

Relatable post (budgeting app). "Me, on the 28th of the month, wondering where it all went. If your money disappears quietly, you are not alone. Tell us your favourite way to track it."

How-to carousel (any app). "How to log a workout in three taps. Open, choose, save: swipe for the screens. Link in bio if you want to try it."

Tips carousel (sleep app). "Four small things that make bedtime easier. None of them is complicated. Save this for tonight."

What's new post. "Version 2.3 is out: faster launch, fewer taps to save an entry, and the home screen you asked for. Update and tell us what you think."

Rules of thumb

  • Keep it under about 600 characters unless the post is a story worth telling.
  • Write the way you speak. Read it aloud.
  • Ask a question only when you will answer the replies.
  • Do not promise results your app cannot deliver, and avoid health or financial claims.
  • Put the app's name in the caption once, not in every sentence.

Hashtags without the guesswork

Pick a mix of a few broad tags for your category, several specific tags for your niche, and one or two for the format. Rotate them between posts rather than pasting the same block every time.

Letting Post Studio write the first draft

Every post that Post Studio writes comes with a caption and hashtags in this structure. You can edit them in the Caption tab and copy the caption with its hashtags in one click. For reel hooks, the free video hook generator writes ten options from an App Store link.

How long should an Instagram caption be?

For most app posts, a hook plus two to three short lines and a call to action, under about 600 characters.

How many hashtags should I use?

Six to ten that are specific to your category and audience. Specific beats generic.

What should the first line of a caption be?

A line that works on its own: a question, a relatable statement or a promise. It is what people see before tapping "more".
